Pediatrics Q & A
What is pediatrics?
Pediatrics is a medical specialty that focuses exclusively on the care of children from birth through the age of 18. As your child ages, it’s important to monitor their growth and development, evaluate their physical, emotional, and mental well-being, and identify early signs of disease.
Pediatric care at Real Wellness, LLC, ensures your child remains healthy throughout every stage of development.
What are the most common pediatric exams?
Pediatric exams give Dr. Winn the opportunity to evaluate your child’s health. Some of the most common exams he performs include:
Well-baby exams
Well-baby exams start shortly after birth and continue at one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, and 24 months.
During these visits, Dr. Winn measures your baby, provides developmental observations, performs a head-to-toe physical exam, and completes a hearing screening.
Well-child exams
After the age of 4, you should bring your children for well-child visits every year. Much like well-baby visits, a well-child exam tracks your child’s physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being.
These visits include a full physical exam, immunizations, and behavioral assessments.
Physical exams
A physical exam is a head-to-toe evaluation that assesses your child’s overall health. As they age, Dr. Winn may provide guidance and counseling on contraception, sexual health, dermatologic concerns, and other bodily changes that your child goes through during adolescence.
If your child joins a new sports team, they may need a sports physical before they’re cleared to play. During these visits, Dr. Winn evaluates your child’s height, weight, vision, blood pressure, strength, and flexibility to determine whether they’re fit to play a certain sport.
Does pediatrics cover sick care?
Dr. Winn provides comprehensive sick care for children whether they come in with a high fever or an upset stomach. You should schedule a sick visit with Dr. Winn if your child has one or more of the following symptoms:
- Rash
- Sore throat
- White spots in throat or tonsils
- Fever (over 100.4°F in infants under three months old)
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Cough
If necessary, Dr. Winn can perform a rapid strep test, flu test, tonsillitis test, or testing for pneumonia, bronchitis, and other potentially serious illnesses.
